tears on a plane (2013)

The first thing I do when I get to my seat on any plane is to check out the entertainment magazine and fold the dog tag/fold the corners of the pages of the movies that I want to watch on the flight. While I always only use to only browse through the Hollywood/New releases section, when I went back to Hong Kong in August due to the lack of attractive sounding films, I found myself browsing through the pages of the international/asian film section and to my surprise/pleasure, there were a few Korean films that I had always wanted to watch because of raving reviews that I had heard.

  1. 늑대소년/Werewolf Boy (Song Joongki, Park Boyoung)

A mother moves with her older daughter (Park Bo-Young) and younger daughter (Kim Hyang-Gi) to a large home in the country side. The older daughter suffers from a lung ailment and her doctor advised the family to move out into the country side. The home is provided by Ji-Tae (Yoo Yeon-Seok), the son of a business partner who worked with their deceased father.
While the family gets acclimated to their new surroundings, the older daughter makes a remarkable discovery. Within a locked room in the barn lives a wild boy (Song Joong-Ki). The family takes him in believing he is just an orphan with little social skills. The boy with little social skills begins to take an interest in the oldest daughter. Meanwhile, Ji-Tae has his own plans in marrying the oldest daughter. What’s the secret behind the wild boy? (AsianWiki)

  2. 타워/Tower (Sol Kyunggu, Son Yejin)

On Christmas Eve, at the luxurious Tower Sky twin tower building in central Seoul, residents and staff members busy themselves with Christmas preparation. A small fire in the restaurant kitchen attracts the attention of Tower Sky staff member Lee Dae-Ho (Kim Sang-Kyung), who notices a faulty water sprinkler system. Building owner Jo (Cha In-Pyo) disregards the warning and goes ahead with the evening’s Christmas party.

Helicopters are hired to circle the building and spray the building with man made snow during the Christmas party. Residents gathered for the event are amazed by the spectacle. Their amazement soon turns into terror when a helicopter loses control and crashes into the building, setting off a chain off horrifying events that threatens the lives of all the residents. 3. 사이코메트리/The Gifted Hands (Kim Kangwoo, Kim Bum)

A little girl is kidnapped and murdered in the jurisdiction of gangbuster detective Yang Chun-dong (Kim Kang-woo), 3 years on the job. During the case, he realizes the crime scene is the same as the mysterious wall paper he saw once on the street and starts tracking down Joon (Kim Beom) who drew it.

Just then, he is arrested but Chun-dong realizes that Joon had the ‘psycho-metry’ ability to see the past by touching someone or something with his right hand. He’d lived his life alone blaming himself for his ability but had been drawing clues to crimes with it. However, he becomes a suspect for the murder case.

Chun-dong uses Joon’s power to track down the real criminal as he believes Joon is the only witness to the case. (HanCinema)

  4. Miracle in Cell No. 7 (Ryu Seungryong, Park Shinhye, Kal Sowon)

Lee Yong-gu is a mentally challenged man with the intelligence of a 6-year-old, which is actually the age of his own daughter Ye-sung who is much smarter than her peers. The two of them lead a happy life while Yong-gu makes a living by working as a parking attendant at a local supermarket. But one day, when the police commissioner’s young daughter dies in a strange accident, Yong-gu is the one who happens to find her. He is falsely accused and sentenced to death for abduction, sexual assault, and murder of a minor. Ye-sung is sent to a childcare institution and Yong-gu gets imprisoned and assigned to Cell No. 7, the harshest cell in a maximum security prison.
At first, the other inmates in the cell keep their guard against Yong-gu, then realize that there’s something not quite right with him. Not understanding his own dire situation, Yong-gu only worries about his daughter. One day, he saves his fellow cellmate, an influential figure in the prison, from an attack by his rival. In return for saving his life, Yong-gu is granted a wish: to see his daughter Ye-sung again. The inmates put their heads together to carry out a daring operation and miraculously succeed in sneaking Ye-sung into Cell No. 7 during a religious event. While the father and daughter rejoice, the others realize it was relatively easy getting her in, but impossible getting her out. After a while, Ye-sung is detected and sent back, but during the time the inmates as well as the prison guards come to realize that Yong-gu was falsely charged. And they all put their heads together to prepare him for his final trial. (Wikipedia)
